Born in 1995 in Cape Town, South Africa, Mické Buitendag is a self-taught mixed media artist who taught herself the beauty of creating art. Her creative journey began shortly after graduating with a degree in business, when she turned to art as a form of therapy and reflection. What started as a therapeutic outlet soon evolved into a compelling artistic practice rooted in introspection, emotional depth, and self-exploration.
Mické Buitendag’s creation style is a form of contemporary and abstract art, with her artistic voice being a flow of expressive energy through mixed media. She works primarily on high-gloss acrylic surfaces, blending digital and traditional media to form expressive, abstract compositions. Her creative process unfolds in three distinct layers, beginning with abstract painting on canvas. Through layers of texture, dynamic brushstrokes, and translucent washes, fragmented and multi-perspective faces emerge; portraits that mirror the complexity of human thought and the many layers of identity.
Themes of femininity and identity are the main vocal points in her works. Each artwork is produced as a one-of-a-kind original piece with layers of depth on high gloss acrylic. With a vibrant palette and rich textural depth, Mické Buitendag’s work captures the tension between chaos and beauty, destruction and renewal, and internal conflict and harmony. Themes of identity, memory, and perception lie at the heart of her practice. Each piece reflects not only the intricacies of who we are but also how we perceive ourselves—and how we are perceived by others.
Mické Buitendag invites viewers to engage deeply with her work, not just as observers, but as participants. Her art encourages emotional connection and introspection, prompting audiences to question their own perceptions and to explore the underlying emotional narratives within each piece. “A painting is an artist’s personal feelings, thoughts, therapeutic imagination, and a physical presentation of the mind,” Mické explains.
2018 Mické Buitendag moved cities to pursue her passion, and she has been part of many successful group exhibitions since.
She is represented by The Artists Gallery in Cape Town, where a selection of her pieces are shown. As of 2024, she moved to Dubai to pursue her international art career.
She has also been part of World Art Dubai, Affordable Art Fair Stockholm, and group exhibitions with The Traveling Art Gallery in Europe.
